Qualification for the 2018 Fifa World Cup has already started in some zones. With over 200 nations involved this is complex, and results in a web page that's rather large! To make it a bit easier to navigate, skip to the zone that interests you most by clicking on the following links:

North, Central American and Caribbean Zone - Qualifying Process

  1. The 14 lowest ranked teams in the region were drawn in pairs to play home and away ties in March 2015. The seven aggregate winners over the two legs progressed to Round 2
  2. The 7 qualifiers from Round 1, plus the next 13 lowest ranked nations in the region were drawn in pairs to play home and away ties in June 2015. The ten aggregate winners over the two legs progressed to Round 3
  3. The 10 qualifiers from Round 2, plus the next 2 lowest ranked nations in the region were drawn in pairs to play home and away ties in August-September 2015. The six aggregate winners over the two legs progress to Round 4
  4. The 6 qualifiers from Round 3, plus the 6 highest ranked nations in the region will drawn into 3 groups of four teams in each, who will play each other in a "round robin" tournament between November 2015 - September 2016. The top two teams from each group will progress to Round 5
  5. The final six teams will play each other in a "round robin" tournament between November 2016 - October 2017. The top three teams will qualify for the World Cup Finals. The fourth placed team may qualify through the inter-continental play-offs

Asian Zone - Qualifying Process

  1. The 12 lowest ranked teams in the region were drawn in pairs to play home and away ties in February-March 2015. The six aggregate winners over the two legs progressed to Round 2
  2. The 6 qualifiers from Round 1, plus the remaining 34 nations in the region were drawn into eight groups of 5 teams per group, who played each other home and away between June 2015 and March 2016. The winners of each group, along with the four strongest runners-up progressed to round 3.
  3. The 12 qualifiers from Round 2 will be drawn into two groups of 6 teams per group, who will play each other home and away between September 2016 and September 2017. The winners and runners-up of each group will qualify for the 2018 Fifa World Cup Finals.
  4. The two third-placed teams will play each other on a home and away basis; the winner will progress to the inter-continental play-offs

African Zone - Qualifying Process

  1. The 26 lowest ranked teams in the region were drawn in pairs to play home and away ties in October 2015. The thirteen aggregate winners over the two legs progressed to Round 2
  2. The 13 qualifiers from Round 1, plus the remaining 27 nations in the region were drawn in pairs to play home and away ties in November 2015. The twenty aggregate winners over the two legs progressed to Round 3
  3. The 20 qualifiers from Round 2 were drawn into 5 groups of four teams in each, who will play each other in a "round robin" tournament between October 2016 - November 2017. The winners of each group will qualify for the World Cup Finals.

South American Zone - Qualifying Process

  1. The 10 teams in the region will play each other in a "round robin" tournament between October 2015 and October 2017. The top 4 teams at the end of this process will qualify for the 2018 Fifa World Cup Finals. The 5th placed team will progress to the inter-continental play-offs

European Zone - Qualifying Process

  1. The 52 teams in the region were drawn into nine groups. The teams in each group played each other in a "round robin" tournament between September 2016 and October 2017. The winners of each group qualified for the 2018 Fifa World Cup Finals. The eight strongest runners-up will progress to Round 2.
  2. The eight strongest runners-up from Round 1 will be drawn into pairs who will play each other home and away. The draw took place on 17th October 2017, with the matches being played in November. The four aggregate winners over the two legs will qualify for the 2018 Fifa World Cup Finals.

Oceania Zone - Qualifying Process

  1. The 4 lowest ranked teams in the region played each other in a "round robin" tournament at a fixed location between 31st August and 8th September 2015. Samoa - the winners of the group - progressed to Round 2.
  2. The winners from Round 1, plus the remaining 7 nations in the region were drawn into two groups of 4 teams per group, who played each other between May and June 2016. The top three teams from each group progressed to round 3.
  3. The 6 qualifiers from Round 2 played each other home and away starting in November 2016. The winners of each group will play each other in the regional play-offs in September 2017.
