Pittsburgh Kielbasa Appetizers with Dipping Sauce

What's the big idea?
Kielbasa (or Kovbasa/Kolbasa/Kubasa) are common North American and Canadian anglicisations for a type of Eastern European sausage, generally believed to have originated in Poland. Indeed, if you ask for "Polish sausage" at your local delicatessen, you should get something close to Kielbasa. It is typically made of pork, although sometimes a combination of beef and pork, and is usually sold pre-cooked, which is why this recipe is so quick and easy!

Kielbasa is a big favourite in Pittsburgh, especially when the local American football team - the Steelers - are playing.

The dipping sauce makes for an interesting accompaniement.

Shopping List
Here's the list of what you need, and if you click the link on the right, the nice people at Tesco will deliver it for you!

  • 1lb kielbasa, cut into ½ inch thick slices
  • One can lager
  • One jar Heinz chili sauce *
  • One small can (8oz) crushed pineapple, drained
  • 6oz brown sugar
* Heinz chili sauce may not be available everywhere. It can be bought online.
Alternatively, substitute one tin chopped tomatoes, 2 tablespoons malt vinegar, and 1 teaspoon chilli powder. It won't taste quite the same, but it'll still work!
