German Pretzels

What's the big idea?
The simplest idea for a German themed football party is to just buy in plenty of good German beer and pretzels. Both have a history stretching back centuries, and they go perfectly together. However, be warned - pretzels can be very salty, so you develop more of a thirst, so you drink quicker! They must have been invented by a German pub landlord! If you prefer to make your own pretzels, here's a recipe for you.

Enjoy!

Here's the list of what you need, and if you click the link on the right, the nice people at Tesco will deliver it for you!

  • 250g strong white flour (bread-making flour)
  • 20g fresh yeast
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 10g soft unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ tablespoon coarse salt crystals
What To Do
BulletpointDissolve the yeast and sugar in 150ml lukewarm water in a bowl.
BulletpointSift in the flour, then add the salt and butter and knead.
BulletpointShape the dough into a ball on a floured surface. Cut into six equal pieces.
BulletpointForm each piece of dough into a long thin roll (about 40 cm long); the middle of the rolls should be slightly thicker than the ends.
BulletpointForm into the traditional Pretzel shape (a knot). Cover with a clean cloth and leave to rise for 10 minutes.
BulletpointStir the baking soda into 1 litre of water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer.
BulletpointImmerse the pretzels one by one in the water for about 30 seconds. Remove and leave to drain.
BulletpointLine a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the pretzels on this. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
BulletpointMeanwhile, pre-heat the oven to 225C. Bake the pretzels in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes.
BulletpointBrush the cooked pretzels with water and sprinkle with coarse salt crystals.
