Savoury Danish Pastries with Bacon & Blue Cheese

What's the big idea?
I thought this twist on the traditional Danish pastry would make an unusual starter. They did. Trouble was, they were so tasty that nobody was interested in a main course - they just wanted more of these! In the end I decided that maybe the best thing to do is to make some for the start of the match, then another batch for half-time, and then serve the "main meal" after the final whistle.

They're also great to take with you if you're going to watch a game.

Shopping List
Here's the list of what you need, and if you click the link on the right, the nice people at Tesco will deliver it for you!

  • 1 tablespoon (Danish) butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic (crushed)
  • 12oz diced (yes, Danish!) back bacon
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon English (what, not Danish?!) mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 4oz crumbled Danish blue cheese
  • 1-2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 12oz puff pastry (the ready made frozen stuff is fine!)
  • 1 egg, beaten

BulletpointAdd the paprika, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper to the pan.
BulletpointAfter a couple of minutes, remove from the heat and allow to cool for at least 10 minutes.
BulletpointMix in the Danish blue cheese and sour cream.
BulletpointRoll out the puff pastry and cut into eight squares.
BulletpointDivide the bacon & cheese mixture equally between the pastry squares.
Bulletpoint Fold two diagonally opposite corners of each pastry square into the middle, to cover most of the cheese mixture.
