Ideas for a Malian Themed Party
Mali is a land-locked country in North West Africa. To the North it shares a border with Algeria, to the East lies Niger, in the West are Mauritania and Senegal, and in the South Mali shares borders with Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Guinea. The northern half of the country is mostly Sahara desert, but the south - where most of the population lives - is more habitable thanks to the Niger and Senegal rivers.

Food for a Mali Themed PartyThe food of Mali is very similar to its near neighbours Ivory Coast and Senegal. As a result, many of the recipes you will find on those nations' pages are also listed below. Everyday meals often consist of corn, rice or millet porridge with various sauces or stews. Rice and couscous are also eaten, and popular ingredients include yams, peanuts, tomatoes, spinach and okra. A popular dish throughout the region is mafé, or Tigadèguèna, which is meat in peanut sauce. Side dishes include fried or mashed plantains and foutou igname - mashed yams.

Drink for a Malian Themed PartyIn common with Mali's neighbours, the most popular drinks are bissap, or Hibiscus Tea , and Green Tea with Mint . Mineral water and fruit juice (especially guava) are also popular drinks with meals. Despite being a largely Muslim country, the production of alcohol is permitted, and many Malians drink local beer, which is made from millet; it's not really available outside Mali, so you're probably better off either trying the hibiscus tea, or just doing your usual thing!
We have not been able to find a reliable source of Malian football shirts at this time. Their home kit is yellow shirts and shorts with green and red trim, and their away kit is white shirts and shorts with yellow, green and red trim.
