Facts & Figures
Gabon derives its name from early Portuguese explorers, who dubbed the area "Gabao", meaning "cloak", in reference to the shape of the Komo river estuary. Since then, Gabon has been heavily influenced by French settlers, and was part of French Equatorial Africa until its independence in 1960. As a footballing nation, Gabon has never enjoyed huge success - they have never qualified for the World Cup finals, but they did reach the quarter finals of the African Cup of Nations in 1996.
