The FA Cup

The FA Cup is one of the world's oldest and best loved football competitions. The final is screened live on TV all over the world, but fortunately for us in the UK, many of the earlier matches are too, providing much needed excuses for throwing a football party in the otherwise bleak mid-winter months!

Click here to visit the official FA Cup site.

Congratulations to Manchester City on winning the 2011 FA Cup. The bookies made them early favourites to win it again, until they were knocked out in the 3rd round! The new favourites - according to the bookies - are now Chelsea, followed by Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal. Click here if you fancy a flutter on the FA Cup.

FA Cup 2nd Round - 2nd/3rd/4th December 2011

The second round of the FA Cup is the stage at which many of the non-league qualifiers come up against league opposition for the first time. This year there were plenty of non-league teams through to the second round, all of them no doubt eager to progress to round three and the chance to play against the big guns of the Premier League. The likes of Gateshead, Salisbury City, Fleetwood Town, AFC Totton, Sutton Utd, Stourbridge, Chelmsford City, Redbridge, or Tamworth all had the opportunity for fame and glory as this year's giant-killing heroes.
Chelmsford City managed a creditable draw against Macclesfield Town
Wrexham managed a 1-0 away win at Brentford
Tamworth made it through past Gateshead
Fleetwood Town drew with Yeovil Town.
Salisbury City drew with Grimsby Town

FA Cup 3rd Round - 7th/8th January 2012

While much of the focus on this year's 3rd round fell on the spectacle - and refereeing decisions - of the Manchester derby, mention should be made of the exploits of some of football's less "glamorous" teams who successfully made it into the 4th round draw. So hats off to Sheffield Wednesday who knocked out West Ham, Crawley Town, Notts County, Wrexham who earned a great draw away at Brighton & Hove Albion, MK Dons who were moments away from defeating QPR, Stevenage who beat Reading, and Swindon Town, who knocked out premiership Wigan Athletic.

FA Cup 4th Round - 28th / 29th January 2012

And so to the fourth round. Not quite so many "giant-killing" exploits perhaps, but still a few interesting fixtures to enjoy, most newsworthy of which was no doubt the tie between Liverpool and Manchester United, which saw United crash out of the competition. Also in the headlines were Brighton & Hove Albion, who knocked out Newcastle United.

It's Unofficial FA Cup 5th Round Fry-Up Weekend!

FA Cup 5th Round - 18th / 19th February 2012

What's the big idea?

It's not rocket science. It's not January any more, but it's still cold and miserable outside. Inside, our friends at ITV are showing four of the 5th Round ties live over the weekend, two of which are lunch-time kick-offs.

So, here's the plan. Do whatever you need to do to get yourself some Valentines browny points in the bag (you had remembered, hadn't you?!), then sort out a football party!
We've unilaterally decided to declare this weekend "FA Cup Fry-Up Weekend"! To be honest, there wasn't much of a vote on it, but there wasn't much argument either. I mean, who WOULDN'T want to spend a couple of hours out of the cold wind, in front of a big screen with your mates, watching a great game of English footy and tucking into huge platefulls of delicious comfort food?

You know it makes sense!

Look, we'll even make it easy for you. Here's your shopping list, and if you click the link on the right, the nice people at Tesco will even deliver it for you. But no, that doesn't get you any Valentines Day browny points!!
  • Valentines Card, flowers, etc
  • Bacon
  • Eggs
  • Sausages
  • Bread - for either fried slices or toast, up to you
  • Mushrooms
  • Tomatoes
  • Baked Beans
  • Black pudding (optional)
  • Hash browns
  • Beer
  • Sauce - brown or red? Up to you....
There, we've done our share of the work, so I'm afraid that means you'll have to do the washing up after the game....

Here's the pick of the weekend's ties:

BulletpointLiverpool vs Brighton & Hove Albion
BulletpointEverton vs Blackpool or Sheffield Wednesday
BulletpointChelsea vs Birmingham City
BulletpointCrawley Town vs Stoke City
BulletpointStevenage vs Tottenham Hotspur
BulletpointNorwich City vs Leicester City
BulletpointSunderland or Middlesbrough vs Arsenal
BulletpointMillwall or Southampton vs Bolton Wanderers
