No doubt the food served in both restaurants and homes in Wigan has changed over recent years, and embraced a whole host of modern, healthy and international influences. However, traditional Wigan food - like much of the food of the North West of England - developed from a need to provide warmth and calories in a cold wet climate, using whatever local ingredients were available. Being roughly equidistant from Liverpool and Manchester, it would probably be just about acceptable to serve traditional Mancunian or Liverpudlian dishes, so we have included a couple here. However, the best known traditional local dish is "Lobbys". There is no "fixed" recipe for this dish, as to some extent whatever left-over or seasonal ingredients were available would just be "lobbed" into the pot, but over time the dish has standardised into a sort of corned beef hash.

Drink for a Wigan Athletic Party

The local brewery in Wigan is All Gates, which produces and sells locally many fine traditional "dark" English beers - bitters, milds, and so on. They have a great reputation but sadly aren't that easy to get hold of outside the North-West of England.
